A Lost Message

The war for the Southern Confederacy in June and July of 1863 was one filled with despair. The South had lost many, many irreplaceable men at Gettysburg in early June. Now, on July 4th, the city of Vicksburg fell. A coded letter was sent to General John C. Pemberton (the sender had no knowledge of the fact that the city had fallen). The mysterious message contained very discouraging news. The unknown officer from whom the message was sent would not be forwarding the requested reinforcements and supplies.
